Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Find the Right Level of Care for Your Recovery

Our Programs

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Welcome to Recovery Is a Beach’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), where we provide structured, evidence-based addiction treatment for individuals who need more support than standard outpatient care, but don’t require the daily commitment of a Partial Hospitalization Program. Our IOP is designed to fit around your life while still giving you the clinical structure you need to build lasting sobriety.

What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

An Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a level of care that sits between our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and standard Outpatient Therapy. It typically involves several hours of treatment a few days a week — commonly three sessions a week, a few hours each — allowing you to continue working, attending school, or managing family responsibilities while still receiving consistent, structured clinical care.

IOP is often the next step for individuals stepping down from PHP or residential treatment, and it’s also an appropriate starting point for those whose substance use disorder requires more structure than weekly outpatient therapy alone can provide, but who don’t need the intensity of a full-day program.

Weekly Schedule

What a Typical Week in IOP Looks Like

IOP schedules are built around consistency without requiring a full day-treatment commitment. A typical week may include:

Group Therapy (3x per Week)

Three sessions per week, each running a few hours, covering topics like relapse prevention, coping skills, and emotional regulation.

Individual Therapy

Regularly scheduled sessions with your primary counselor to track progress and work through personal challenges.

Psychiatric Care & Medication Management

Access to psychiatric care and medication management for co-occurring mental health conditions, as needed.

Family Therapy

Sessions scheduled as needed to rebuild trust and strengthen your support system at home.

Educational Workshops

Workshops on addiction, relapse prevention, and life skills to reinforce what you've learned in treatment.

Sessions are typically offered during the day or evening, making it easier to build treatment around work, school, or caregiving responsibilities.

Key Features of Our IOP

Structured, Flexible Scheduling

Our IOP offers several hours of treatment a few days a week — enough structure to keep you accountable and supported, without requiring the full-day commitment of PHP.

Individualized Treatment Plans

Our experienced team works closely with you to build a treatment plan around your specific needs, which may include individual therapy, group therapy, medication management, and other evidence-based practices.

Group-Centered Clinical Support

Group therapy is a cornerstone of IOP, giving you the chance to build a support network with peers navigating similar challenges while working through evidence-based curricula led by licensed clinicians.

A Bridge Between Levels of Care

IOP is designed to help you maintain momentum after PHP or residential treatment, or to provide additional structure before stepping down to standard Outpatient Therapy — reducing the risk of relapse during transitions between levels of care.

Continued Family & Aftercare Support

Alongside clinical treatment, our IOP incorporates family therapy and aftercare planning to help you build a stable foundation for long-term recovery beyond the program.

Built-in peer support through consistent group therapy with others in recovery.

Levels of Care

IOP vs. PHP vs. Outpatient Therapy: What's the Difference?

It's common to wonder how IOP compares to other levels of care:

Step 1

Most Intensive Outpatient Care

Partial Hospitalization (PHP)

Offers several hours of treatment per day, most days of the week — the most intensive outpatient level of care.

Step 2 · This Page

Structured, Flexible Support

Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

Involves fewer hours per week than PHP, typically a few sessions spread across several days — enough structure to stay supported while keeping up with daily responsibilities.

Step 3

Lowest Time Commitment

Outpatient Therapy (OP)

Involves the fewest scheduled hours of any level of care — usually one to a few sessions per week — making it the right fit for those with a stable foundation in recovery who need ongoing, lower-intensity support.

Many clients move through this continuum — starting with detox or residential care, stepping down to PHP, then IOP, and finally to standard outpatient support — building independence at each stage.
